A lot happened to the young Madison Cawthorn in that month. It was the second time the Republican congressman from North Carolina, age 26, was caught taking a loaded gun past airport security. Police posted video of him being stopped for having expired licence plates and being instructed to turn them in.

Insider trading claims were made against him, according to The Washington Examiner. Politico revealed images of him enjoying himself while dressed in women’s underwear. And a former congressional assistant complained about him at work.

Cawthorn is not Well Liked by North Carolina

Republican Lt. Governor Mark Robinson hasn’t shied away from using inflammatory language of his own. They perfectly encapsulate what the North Carolina Republican Party has evolved into: an extremist party. a group that has supported former president Donald Trump despite all odds.

And it appears that certain members of their party, at least on the inside, are not pleased with that branding. “Cawthorn is not well liked by North Carolina Republicans as a whole. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-North Carolina, broke his silence on Friday following days of GOP outrage over his comments on a podcast alleging congressional colleagues were using drugs and inviting him to sex parties.

“Many of us think he is an embarrassment to our party and state,” a GOP strategist said, speaking anonymously. In a long statement, however, Cawthorn made an effort to disassociate himself from his own remarks by asserting that the media and Democrats were the ones who fabricated the claims about cocaine use and orgies.

In a message uploaded on Twitter, he said that “my words on a recent podcast appearance calling out corruption have been utilised by the left and the media to criticise my Republican colleagues and falsely suggest their involvement in unlawful activities.”

Cawthorn said that several of his more senior coworkers had invited him to orgies while discussing “the sexual perversion that goes on in Washington” on the podcast.
