The stakes had been raised for Vice President Mike Pence. While trying to navigate President Donald Trump’s ego for the past three years and 11 months, all the while using strategic quiet or florid flattery to keep his employer happy, he was now being slandered by the president.

Angry at Pence’s reluctance, Trump lashed out at him. He had been subjected to a barrage of pressure from the president in a series of meetings, in which he was cajoled and threatened.

Trump called Pence’s residence just before he left for the Capitol to oversee the Electoral College tally on Wednesday to make one final push. According to two people briefed on the encounter, Trump warned him, “You can either go down in history as a patriot or you can go down in history as a pussy.”

After the president publicly excoriated the vice president at an explosive rally and drove furious fans to the Capitol, where they rushed the building, some of them yelling “Hang Mike Pence,” the nation’s two highest elected officials then played out in spectacular fashion.
