Bottoms declared, “It is quite evident to me today that it is time to hand the torch to someone else.” Her comments came after she unexpectedly announced on Thursday evening that she will not run for reelection this year. Bottoms revealed to reporters at City Hall that she had debated whether to run for office again since the beginning of her stint as mayor.
She acknowledged that there was no one factor that led to her choice, but added that she no longer had the same passion for the campaign for another term.Regarding her future, she denied reports that she would be working for Chicago-based Walgreens by stating that she has no immediate plans to look for another office or take a new role.
It Is Time To Pass The Torch On To Someone Else
But Bottoms argued that if she had opted to pursue a campaign, she would have won her race despite facing an expectedly difficult reelection bid. “I’m unsure about what lies ahead for our family and me personally. However, I am confident that this choice was taken from a place of strength rather than weakness, she remarked.
The mayor was nonetheless reminded by the most recent tornado that struck the metro Atlanta region that “moments and things are broader than just one individual.” Bottoms eventually stated that it had become “abundantly evident to me that it is time to pass the torch on to someone else,” but she had made the decision not to express support for any particular candidate.

Bottoms Cited Internal Surveys
The 51-year-old mayor, who just barely prevailed in a runoff election four years prior, rebuffed any inquiries as to whether she might have won a second election later this year. She mentioned a fundraiser she organised for her reelection with Biden’s backing.
Bottoms cited internal surveys to claim that they showed she would easily win the race without a runoff and that 70% of Atlantans “still liked me.” Bottoms said that the “past three years have not been at all what I would have scripted for our city,” becoming tearful at moments as she recalled some of the more trying periods during her tenure as mayor.
Her Choice Had Been Influenced By The Social Justice Demonstrations
She brought up the Covid-19 pandemic, which severely affected Atlanta and the state of Georgia, the social justice demonstrations last year sparked by George Floyd’s passing, an early ransomware cyberattack on Atlanta, and leading the city under the previous president Donald Trump, whom she mockingly referred to as a “madman.”
She also denied claims that her choice had been influenced by the Atlanta Civil Service Board’s judgement that Garrett Rolfe, the former Atlanta police officer accused of fatally shooting Rayshard Brooks in a Wendy’s parking lot in 2020, had been wrongfully terminated. Currently, Rolfe is expected to be reinstituted.

Bottoms remarked, “I don’t agree with the decision. “We have consistently maintained that we adhered to the protocols that were necessary in such emergency situations. Although the board disagreed, which was their prerogative, I would proceed exactly the same manner if I could do it over again.”
