Shane O’Neill 31, is the best male street skater in the United States and has great expectations for Tokyo.
If he won gold, he’d be competing as a skateboarder for the first time for something other than himself, and he thought that was pretty cool.
I hope one day to be able to say, “I brought home a medal for my nation.”
In spite of the fact that I’ve been skateboarding for many years, I never intended for it to be an Olympic sport. It defies logic.
Skaters Keegan Palmer (age 18), Poppy Starr Olsen (age 21), and Hayley Wilson (age 19) are the other Australians to make the cut.
Both men and women can compete for medals in the street and park events.
Shane O’Neill, a former world champion, hailed from the Melbourne suburbs of Werribee and Glenroy, and as a teen, he would take public transportation into the city centre to skate with his pals.
Athletes today, he claimed, will do anything to advance their careers, which is a major change from his day.
Shane O’Neill remarked that “there is a large athletic and health side to everything” in the skateboarding culture nowadays.
“There has been a shift in the level of seriousness with which individuals approach it. Many people look forward to participating in the contests.
Because of Shane O’Neill s prominence in skateboarding, Nike collaborated with him in 2020 to create a trademark shoe for the sport called “the Shane.”
‘It’s the pinnacle of my professional success,’ he boasted.
It’s next to impossible to get a pair of Nike shoes.
He understands that his participation in the Olympics in Tokyo will likely be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as it is for many sportsmen.
It’s fairly unbelievable that these Games are happening in 2020, he said, given the year we’ve had so far.
There won’t be any spectators at this massive contest, but the broadcast will be watched all around the world. Unlike prior Olympic competitions, this one is sure to be memorable.
With any luck, the Olympic spotlight will inspire more of his countrymen to take up the sport and help it reach its full potential.
