Where Exactly Have The Olympic Games been Held?

With the modern Olympics beginning in 1896, there have been a total of 28 Summer Games and 22 Winter Games. So far, the Summer Olympics have been hosted by 23 different cities whereas the Winter Olympics have been hosted by only 19. For the most part, European and North American cities have hosted the summer and winter Olympic Games.

Most of the games have been held in European cities (29 editions). In 2016, for the first time, the summer games were held in South America, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Twelve times have been held in North America, and six times in Asia. Historically, Oceania has held two Olympic Games. The Olympic Games have never been held on the African continent.

The Olympic Games Have Never Been Held in Africa; Why is That?

The Olympic Games have never been staged in Africa, despite the fact that the continent has hosted other important sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, the World U18 Championship in Athletics, and the All-African Games.

South Africa has been identified in multiple assessments as the only African nation with the infrastructure and resources to host the Games. But significant drawbacks, such as a high crime rate, have been brought to light that would rule it out for selection.

Jacques Rogge, then-president of the International Olympic Committee, urged African cities to submit bids for the 2016 Games in 2005, believing that they had a good chance of being selected if they did so. Kenya stated its plan to bid on Nairobi but did not submit a competitive offer. Further, Cape Town, South Africa was considered for the 2004 Olympics. In any case, Athens was selected as the host city.

To What Date Will Africa Play Host to the Olympic Games?

The process of selecting the host city usually begins at least seven years before the Games and is divided into two parts, each of which takes two years to complete. Cities that are interested in hosting the Games submit bids through their national Olympic committees. After a thorough interview process and multiple facility inspections by IOC officials, a shortlist of cities is presented to the IOC members for voting.

The next two Winter Olympics and the next three Summer Olympics have already been awarded to their respective host cities. No African cities are included in the list of hosts. However, the Youth Summer Olympic Games have been rescheduled from 2022 to 2026, and Dakar, Senegal has been chosen to host the event. It’s only a matter of time before South Africa hosts the Olympics as well, thanks to the success of the 2010 World Cup Event.
