A Republican Guards hospital nurse named Javad Foroughi, 41, won gold in the 10m air pistol event at the Olympics on Sunday, making him the Islamic Republic’s oldest and newest Olympic champion.
On Saturday, Foroughi became the first Iranian to win a shooting medal at the Olympics. He survived COVID-19 in the worst-hit country in the Middle East.
Iran’s official newspaper proclaimed, “Foroughi makes history with a golden shot,” and featured his image prominently on the top page.
When Iran’s national anthem was sung, the ultra-conservative Javan newspaper published a photo of Foroughi on the podium offering a military salute.
The nurse who received the medal was described as “a guardian of health and of the shrine,” according to the publication.
Those who advocate on Iran’s behalf in Syria and Iraq, where important Shi’ite sanctuaries are located, are known as “defenders of the shrine.”
Foroughi shared his experiences working in field hospitals in Syrian conflict zones, notably Palmyra, with the public television channel Salamat (“Health” in Persian) in the beginning of May.
According to the media, Foroughi was infected with COVID-19 in August of last year, and he has since helped fight the virus both abroad and in Iran, where approximately 89,000 deaths have been documented among more than 3,690,000 cases.
When Foroughi made the game-winning shot in Tokyo, Iranian state media carried a story from Baqiyatallah Hospital in Tehran, which is managed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in which the hospital’s staff celebrated his achievement.
According to Sepahnews, the leader of the Guards, Hossein Salami, was also happy with the victory, calling the gunman a “exuberant Guard of the Islamic revolution.”
Minutes after Foroughi’s successful shot, President-elect Ebrahim Raisi reportedly called him on the phone. Raisi will take office next month.
According to Foroughi, he started shooting professionally just in 2017. On Saturday, he won a bronze medal at the Olympics, making him his country’s oldest Olympian ever. Thanks for read our Article J. Foroughi Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
