In memory of the victims of the September 11th attacks 20 years ago, artist Shaya Gutleizer built an 8-foot-tall model of the “Twin Towers” and a “Flag of Heroes” honouring each by name. He says he was unable to visit New York last year owing to the pandemic, so he made the monument in its place.

I imagined we’d get one up this year at the earliest to provide people a place to pay their respects. “They can grieve, gather with family and friends, and go on with their lives,” Gutliezer added.

His front lawn is also adorned with 412 little flags, each representing one of the first responders who lost their lives that day. Former New York City emergency medical technician Gutleizer has since retired. He was on duty during the September 11 attacks.

He explained that the monument was built to spark curiosity and conversation about the tragic events of that day and to serve as a teaching tool for future generations.
