In memory of the victims of the September 11th attacks 20 years ago, artist Shaya Gutleizer built an 8-foot-tall model of the “Twin Towers” and a “Flag of Heroes” honouring each by name. He says he was unable to visit New York last year owing to the pandemic, so he made the monument in its place.

I imagined we’d get one up this year at the earliest to provide people a place to pay their respects. “They can grieve, gather with family and friends, and go on with their lives,” Gutliezer added.

His front lawn is also adorned with 412 little flags, each representing one of the first responders who lost their lives that day. Former New York City emergency medical technician Gutleizer has since retired. He was on duty during the September 11 attacks.

He explained that the monument was built to spark curiosity and conversation about the tragic events of that day and to serve as a teaching tool for future generations.

On the way back from West Point on September 10, Sarah Cullen and her mother drove along Interstate 95 and saw the Twin Towers in the distance. She enlisted in the army that afternoon of September 11th, became a helicopter pilot, and was killed in action.

But there are amazing tales of people who joined our service and made sacrifices after 9/11, Ritz added. Ritz has worked tirelessly with the support of volunteers and donations totaling over $60,000 to ensure that the lives of the thousands of Americans who perished on 9/11 are not forgotten.

We vowed to always remember this moment. And, you know, it’s kind of been…my whole life’s mission, I guess,” Ritz remarked. This week at 1320 Innovation Street in Middle River, you can check out the exhibit.
