In a final that was disrupted by weather, the Indian discus thrower threw a personal best of 63.70 metres. Sixth place was the best Kamalpreet Kaur could do among the top 12 contestants.
Kamalpreet Kaur put up a solid performance on Monday to match India’s best-ever showing in the discus throw at the Olympics.
Kamalpreet Kaur, 25, placed sixth out of 12 competitors in the women’s final at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo in 2020 with a best throw of 63.70 metres. In the preliminary round, she had covered 64 metres.
With a score of 63.70, Kamalpreet tied Krishna Poonia, the gold medalist from the 2010 Commonwealth Games, for sixth place in the final at the 2012 London Olympics.
Valarie Allman of the United States won the gold medal at Tokyo 2020 with a distance of 68.98 metres, and Kristin Pudenz of Germany won silver with a distance of 66.86 metres on her final attempt.
At the same time, Cuba’s Yaime PĂ©rez, the defending world champion, settled for bronze with a 65.72m effort.
On her first attempt, Kamalpreet Kaur threw 61.62m, good enough for sixth place in the provisional rankings. After a brief rain delay, the final continued with the participants still striving for a spot in the top eight.
In the championship round of a track and field competition, all competitors receive three attempts and only the top eight advance to use the remaining six.
When Kamalpreet Kaur threw a 63.70m discus, she vaulted from ninth position after round two to sixth.
However, she was unable to go for the medals at her first Olympics since she had a 61.37-meter throw in between two foul attempts.
At the Federation Cup in March, Kamalpreet Kaur set the national record with a distance of 65.06 metres, a personal best for her. While her 66.59m throw at the Indian Grand Prix in June would have set a new national record in the presence of more than one competitor, she was the only one in the competition.
